In Southeast Asia, in countries like Thialand, Burma, Cambodia, and Laos, Theravada is the most popular there.

The focus of this type of Buddhism is to cultivate liberation and become an arhat. An arhat means to be a fully awaken being. You can do this though meditation practice taking refuge in the Three Jewels, contemplation of the dhamma, and the cultivation of the Noble Eightfold Path.

#2 Mahayana Buddhism

Another Major school of Buddhism is the Mahayana. This type of Buddhism is actually the largest school in the entire world. It is very popular in many countries in Asia like Nepal, Tibet, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and Mongolia. Mahayana means “great vehicle.” This refers to the path of the bodhisattva. The main aim of Mahayana Buddhism is to not just attain enlightenment but to cultivate beddhahood for all sentient beings. Many people take the bodhisattva vows.

The traditional Four Great Vows are:

Sentient beings are numberless,
I vow to save them.
Desires are inexhaustible,
I vow to put an end to them.
The Dharmas are boundless,
I vow to master them.
The Buddha Way is unsurpassable,
I vow to attain it.

#3 Vairayana Buddhism

Some people consider Vairayana Buddhism as a type of Mahayana while other scholars consider it as its own specific type of Buddhism.  This type of Buddhism is sometimes called Tantric or Esoteric Buddism. Tibetan Buddhism is the most famous form of this school. With the use of tantras or specific spiritual techniques, individuals gain enlightenment as quickly as possible. If the practices aren’t done carefully, individuals can be lead into more clinging, and suffering.
